John von Neumann: The architect of the game
Strategic thinking was an art for two thousand years. In 1928 a Budapest-born mathematician proved its first great theorem, and in 1944 he and an economist gave the art a name: game theory.

John von Neumann was, by wide agreement among people not given to awe, the fastest mind of his generation. Born in Budapest in 1903, he held positions in Berlin and Hamburg before joining the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, where he remained from 1933 until his death in 1957. He contributed foundational work to set theory, quantum mechanics, the Manhattan Project, and the stored-program architecture that still organizes essentially every computer built today.
Strategy was, characteristically, a side project. Von Neumann was drawn to poker, where the interesting problem is not the cards but the other players: the best move depends on what your opponent believes, which depends on what you have chosen to show them. Existing mathematics had nothing to say about that loop.
His 1928 paper on parlor games proved the minimax theorem: in any two-player zero-sum game, there is a level of payoff that each player can guarantee, and the two guarantees meet. Rational play in pure conflict is not a paradox of infinite second-guessing but a solvable problem, provided players are allowed to randomize. Bluffing, the paper showed, is not psychology but mathematics: mixing your plays at calculated frequencies is the provably correct way to keep an opponent from exploiting you.
