No. Volkswagen Group committed to NACS in December 2023. What it delayed was changing the physical port: the ID.4 kept CCS1 and reaches Tesla Superchargers through an adapter, standard on model year 2026 Volkswagen EVs.

Why would an automaker stage the switch instead of changing the port at once?

Committing aligns a company with the settled standard at almost no cost, while changing the hardware is expensive. A firm that also owns a network built on the old connector has a further reason to bridge with an adapter and move the port at the next platform change.

The Last Port to Switch

Every major automaker in North America has committed to Tesla's charging plug. Volkswagen committed too, yet kept the old port on its cars and bridged the gap with an adapter. The interesting game is the gap between promising and switching.

Tesla's connector has become the North American EV charging standard, formalized by SAE International as J3400, the North American Charging Standard [VERIFIED]. Volkswagen Group, spanning VW, Audi, Porsche and Scout, announced in December 2023 that it would build NACS ports into future North American models beginning in 2025 [VERIFIED]. Its ID.4 nonetheless kept a CCS1 port, reaching Tesla Superchargers through an adapter that comes standard with model year 2026 Volkswagen EVs [VERIFIED].
