Lloyd Shapley was an American mathematician who spent much of his career at the RAND Corporation and UCLA, and who is regarded as one of the most important figures in cooperative game theory, the branch concerned with what coalitions can achieve and how they should divide the gains. Where non-cooperative theory asks how rivals compete, Shapley asked how partners should share.

He was a mathematician's mathematician, contributing deep results across the field. Two of them became so foundational that they carry his name directly.

The Shapley value answers a question that sounds simple and is not: when several parties cooperate to produce a joint result, how much did each one actually contribute? Shapley derived a unique formula, based on averaging each player's marginal contribution across every possible order of joining the coalition, that satisfies a set of natural fairness axioms. It is the definitive answer to how to divide credit or cost among collaborators.
