John Nash: The definer of equilibrium

John Nash was an American mathematician whose brief, brilliant early career at Princeton was followed by decades of severe mental illness and, remarkably, eventual recovery and recognition. His 1950 doctoral thesis, only a few dozen pages long, transformed game theory from a special theory of pure conflict into a general theory of strategic interaction.
Von Neumann had solved zero-sum games, where one player's gain is another's loss. But most real situations are not zero-sum; they mix competition and common interest. Nash asked what a solution to those games would even look like.
Nash defined the equilibrium that bears his name: a combination of strategies where each player is doing the best they can given what everyone else is doing, so no one has any incentive to change unilaterally. It is not necessarily the best outcome for the group, only a stable one. The prisoner's dilemma's tragic result, where both players defect, is a Nash equilibrium: mutual defection is stable precisely because neither can improve by switching alone.
